Equestrian Dress | Horse Attire

in Western Wear

To really look the part, equestrian dress will give you the look you want, whether for serious horseback riding or just appearances.  The horse rider needs to feel graceful and comfortable, so clothing must be chosen by function and style both.  Light, hard wearing cloths are important, as is choosing cool materials that allow easy motion.

Equestrian Dress Styles

The more common kinds of material used for equestrian dress is cotton fiber and Lycra but choose a fabric that also acts as a moisture wick.  This type of material works well in both hot and cold temperatures.  In the heat the material will keep you cool by letting you sweat and when it’s cold it will help you stay warm by keeping sweat off of your body and leaving your skin dry.  This fabric prevents the moisture from getting in too deep, which provides the fabric to dry fast. On top of that, you can pick out materials and material weaves that lower the absorption of moisture and repel insects and ultraviolet rays.  So, what all types of equestrian garments are there?

The primary item is a top, typically constructed in cotton fiber or wool crepe, which is normally white and to that you would add on a waistcoat or a vest that would match.  For the lower body, breeches and jodhpurs are the more popular pieces although some prefer full-seat horseback riding breeches, there are still those who like jeans and jodhpurs.  Ensure the piece fits you and pick one out that protects from bad weather.  Don’t forget the matching horseback riding gloves!  Tall horseback riding boots look great for shows and competitions, but trouser socks, worn with a short boot are better for training days.  To bring off the look you will need a horseback riding jacket in a luxurious tweed.  Attention to details such as a silk lining or double satin piping and trim is a necessity.

Helmets are the typical piece of head gear since they have easy-fit systems in use, but there are some who prefer to wear black top hats instead.  Today’s trend for horse riding helmets is toward a softer color, like the pastels of blue, green or pink, but some riders like to decorate them with decals or crystals.  The identical goes for show breeches with light tans although white remains popular.  Both show and dressage horse riding coats are available in many different colors, still, the fashion trend is moving toward darker shades of navy and black rather than the more popular lighter shades of brown and khaki.  The coats sport stripes and patterns, not just plain solid colors.

Tall leather boots that have a zip fastener are a lot more popular for shows and if they have zippers on the back they are a lot easier to take off but if you’re really into training, half chaps and paddock boots are still popular because of their dependability.  With a diverse range of equestrian garments available to riders, picking the type optimal for you as an athlete does not have to be a challenge.
