Colic in toddlers could just be a regular occurrence for moms and dads, after all, colic occurs with just about everyone and as soon as you adjust to the shouting, crying, and screaming, it can be as normal as eating and sleeping. However, when a horse suffers from horse colic, it can be extremely severe, and it is vital that you cure it as soon as possible. When treated to therapy and medical intervention, some horses respond well, yet most of the horses still deteriorate even being supervised by a veterinarian.
Young horses screaming and crying is satisfactory as long as they do not stamp and pace around. Such can cause risk to people around them as well as themselves.
The pain induces horses to engage in risky demeanor and they can cause bodily damage to individuals, property and themselves. Horses are prone to colic as is common knowledge of any one who works with horses, like horse buffs, horse breeders, horse riders etc. horse colic is considered an equine emergency.
The least critical type of horse colic is the first type, also known as irregular, and is instigated by an overabundance of abdominal wind. The other one is the obstructive intestinal colic, which is often caused by impediments in some parts of their body and may be in the form of displacements or twists in their muscular tissues.
Another cause for intestinal horse colic is an impacted intestine or large colon, which will require treatment with medication or oil, and in some serious cases, with fluid therapy. Another type of intestinal colic is caused by overeating while another is caused by worms.
A horse’s general anatomy is much different than that of humans. Intestinal colic in horses is quite serious. Horses cannot manage with the pressure in their belly and unlike people, they cannot vomit. Over time, the pressure builds and induces dilatation that will finally require decompressing. Horses are born with tiny anatomical parts, especially in the digestive systems that can cause impaction and impediments.
Impediments happen due to the blood having to journey through a narrow path with lots of twists and turns. When this happens, the horse can die because blood circulation will cease and supply of oxygen to the heart will stop. Horses are very delicate to the bacteria that come into their bodies particularly those that go into their intestines. Their bodies have such a delicate balance in bacterium that changes in supplements or their diets can have severe outcomes.
