Horse hooves care can be rather intimidating. The thought of getting kicked in the arm, shoulder, leg or worse, the head is scary! If you take the proper cautions chances you will not get injured. If your horse is trained cleaning her hooves should be fairly easy.
Horse Hooves Care – How to Safely Clean Hooves
The safest way to clean a horses hooves is to have someone else do the cleaning. LOL This isn’t always feasible though.
You should approach your horse so that he/she knows you are there. You don’t want to spook your horse. You should have proper shoe attire on, no sandals or open toed shoes!
Run your hand down your horses shoulder and down her leg. Gently grab the ankle and send a verbal cue to your horse as you pick gently squeeze her tendons. If your horse has been trained she will likely pick up her foot without the need for squeezing.
With your horses hoof now up you are free to clean it. Praise your horse after cleaning. After a several times cleaning your horse hooves your horse will get better and know what to expect when you run your hand down her leg and send her the verbal cue.
